Governors Bay, Christchurch, New Zealand

Description

Governor’s Bay is a peaceful settlement on the shores of Lyttelton Harbour, a place rich with layers of history. Long before European arrival, the area was part of the traditional Māori landscape of Whakaraupō, used for travel, gathering resources, and connecting coastal communities. Later, it became one of the early European footholds around the harbour, known for its orchards, guesthouses, and its scenic route over the hills into Christchurch.

The wharf — a familiar and much-loved landmark — was severely damaged during the Christchurch earthquakes, leaving the jetty twisted and unusable for many years. This photograph captures the structure in that damaged state, a reminder of the force of the quakes and the patience of the community. After a determined local effort, the jetty was rebuilt and finally reopened in 2023, restoring a treasured link between the bay and the water.
